The Grammar of Ornament – Owen JonesA Visual Masterpiece, Reimagined for the Modern EyeStep into a world of timeless beauty and design with this special edition of The Grammar of Ornament. This visually stunning reissue features only the original 113 full-color plates from Owen Jones’s iconic 1856 publication, carefully restored and digitally enhanced to bring these masterpieces to life for today’s readers. In this edition, the dense 19th-century commentary is removed, allowing readers to focus entirely on what has captivated artists, designers, architects, and collectors for over a century: the images themselves. With over 2,000 ornamental designs drawn from 37 diverse cultural and historical styles, from Ancient Egypt and Renaissance Europe to Islamic architecture and East Asian motifs, these plates offer a breathtaking journey through the global language of pattern, color, and form. Each page represents a work of art, originally produced using chromolithography, a revolutionary color printing technique that allowed for highly detailed and vibrant reproductions. In this modern reprint, each plate has been digitally reviewed and refined, ensuring the colors are as vivid and the details as crisp as the originals. This is not merely a facsimile, but a revitalized art object in its own right, showcasing the beauty and precision of ornamental design. This book is ideal for artists and designers seeking authentic historical inspiration, educators and students of visual culture and decorative arts, and anyone who appreciates the universal beauty of ornament. It is not a book for reading but for seeing, a visual treasure trove of the world’s most exquisite patterns. Whether you explore it for inspiration or display it as a design artifact, this image-only edition of The Grammar of Ornament offers a rich, timeless resource that will continue to inspire the next generation of creators.Economical Aspect:Since its publication in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament has become a cornerstone in the history of decorative arts. It has been used as a primary textbook in architecture and design schools, influencing graphic design, textiles, interior design, and countless creative fields. However, the original edition consists of a bulky 690-page volume filled with blank pages, repetitive sections, and low-quality aged scans. In modern printing, such a format costs around 100 USD, making it difficult for most readers to obtain. To make this great work both modern and accessible, I carried out an extensive reconstruction. I removed all redundant blank pages, duplicate sheets, and unnecessary gaps, reducing the book from 690 pages to 300. I then restored every color plate and created a separate “Color Reference Book,” containing all cultural sections, plates, and index information in high resolution. The text-only sections were reorganized into a standalone “Black & White Text Edition,” improving readability while significantly lowering production costs. Both books were designed in a portable 6×9 inch format, turning them into a practical reference set suitable for daily use. Additionally, every single page was digitally restored, with faded colors revived and blurred lines sharpened to a professional standard. With this redesigned system, the cost has been reduced dramatically—nearly to one quarter of the original. Instead of paying around 100 USD for a single unwieldy volume, readers can now access both books for only 25 USD (15 USD for the color edition + 10 USD for the text edition). This makes Jones’s monumental work accessible to students, designers, artists, historians, and anyone interested in ornament and pattern design. The Grammar of Ornament, in this renewed and restored edition, preserves its historical significance while meeting the practical needs of the modern reader. Read more
