The coastline in this area is one of the most beautiful in North America, but since the 1800s it has been considered one of the most deadly due to stormy storms and thick fogs. The lighthouse is a white brick conical tower with a black lantern. A red brick caretaker's house stands next to the lighthouse. The lighthouse was automated in 1958. The caretaker's house has been restored and is open to the public. The lighthouse tower is open to the public in summer. The complex was maintained by the National Park Service, and automated light is controlled by the United States Coast Guard.
