The same Los Angeles studio. A completely different mood.

This is a vintage Maurice of California ceramic piece, model D405 — a large triangle-form Mid-Century Modern design in bright green, turquoise, and gold glaze. Circa 1960s. Marked on the base: Maurice of Calif, USA, D405. One available.

Where the DL-701 radiates outward in warm citrus rings, the D405 is cooler, more architectural — a clean triangle, nearly 11 inches long, glazed in the aqua and green palette that defined California modernism's most sophisticated output. The gold accent pulls the whole composition together, giving it the kind of quiet glamour that looks equally at home on a mid-century bar cart, a design-forward desk, or a well-considered shelf. Five notches, generously sized. The form is bold without being loud. Confirmed genuine, marked clearly on the base.

Maurice of California was founded in Los Angeles in 1954 by Maurice Pechman, a Polish immigrant and Holocaust survivor who built one of the most characterful California pottery studios of the era. Operating until 1985, the company produced a range of boldly designed ceramics that are today actively sought by mid-century collectors — particularly the distinctive ashtray forms, of which the D405 is among the most elegant.

Displays beautifully as a desk catchall, a jewelry or key tray, or a sculptural accent in any mid-century or modern interior.

A wonderful find for a Maurice of California collector, a California pottery enthusiast, or anyone furnishing a space with genuine mid-century American design.
